Since you asked:

"Therefore, to be possess'd with double pomp, to guard a title that was rich before, to gild refined gold, to paint the lily,
to throw a perfume on the violet, to smooth the ice, or add another hue unto the rainbow, or with taper-light
to seek the beauteous eye of heaven to garnish, is wasteful and ridiculous excess."

~William Shakespeare,
ca. 1595

Yup, that's us.

First day of summer...

On this first day of summer, I treated myself to a trip to the flea market where it started to get a little too hot a little too early, but then the clouds came in off the coast and cooled things down enough for me to keep poking around a while. I saw Robin there, and we chatted for a few minutes while we clutched dusty little handfuls of treasures from one booth and waited to find out how much trouble we were in....

Afterward, I came home and pulled out my tubs of shells and sea fans and dusted off my matte white pottery, including this lovely piece that came from the old Prairie Sampler store, one of Wanda's finds, no doubt. She was a present to me from Dorothy Gail and Jeanne, and is a wonderful centerpiece on the mantle in these warmer months. I haven't glammed her up too much yet, but the shells gradually creep up her dress and nestle around her, until she looks like she's rising up out of them.
Our lavender is taking over the front yard, so I cut big swathes of it and jammed it in the other pieces of pottery, loving a little greenery but even more so its restrained grayish green color. At the end of the mantle is a little Victorian carved wood box studded with old shells, probably someone's vacation project, and behind the lady rests a beautiful piece of stippled brass, a little tray that Theresa just gave me last week (she is, as she says, shedding fiercely). The rest of it is just shells and sea fans, and little bits of sea glass strewn around.

There's something about a sea fan that I find irresistable. It's beautiful but prickly, and the contrast against the shells is so striking...

Raining roses...

It always rains roses on Thursdays (except when it pours peonies). I just had to share these with you, they were that glorious. Theresa is to blame for the beautiful roses that come to Lily, and these were too beautiful for words...

Felicitous felines...

Meet Boo, Nathalie's cat. The cat she was going to find a home for. Of course, we knew that wasn't true. After two days, I asked her if she was really trying. Nathalie, being Nathalie, doesn't lie very well, and most times doesn't try, preferring the easier task of telling the truth. So, she said, "Not really..." and we knew that Boo was here to stay.We used to have an upstairs/downstairs sort of household, with the dogs living upstairs and the cats living downstairs. This started when Sadie moved in...

This is Sadie. We first met Sadie while we were walking our two dogs of that time, Mika and Noodge. She was a young cat, sitting on the wall of a house that was partially demolished and most clearly unoccupied. We surmised that she had been left behind, but stopped ourselves just short of taking her in.

Well, we ended up with her anyway, a few years down the road. Here's what transpired:

She left the old house down the street, and moved in with a couple down the alley. They in turn sold their house and bought the brick Tudor across the street and down a little bit from us. We saw Sadie there and she was friendly and chatty, and I remember remarking that she looked just like that cat we had seen a few years earlier. One and the same as we found out later.

The couple made the mistake of getting a dog and that really didn't sit well with Sadie. She moved out, and moved in with my next door neighbors, Dawn and Suzanne, who had just lost their dog, Murphy. It looked like clear sailing for Sadie...

Stormy seas arose, though, in the shape of Charlie, a dog Suzanne took in from friends who were moving out of the country. Sadie might have put up with it, but Charlie was a really rambunctious guy and she moved on. All of one door down. She figured the chihuahua would be easier to take, and within two days she was sleeping with my husband. Dawn showed up a couple of weeks later with her cat box, litter, food and toys.

She managed to survive the acquisition of two more chihuahuas, but Boo moving in downstairs reallly got her knickers in a twist. She started venturing upstairs and took over the living room. It wasn't long before Boo followed her up. I wouldn't say we're a totally integrated household yet; we still have separate drinking bowls, and a baby gate provides a buffer between the two factions, but it is calm enough here that Boo and Sadie can nap in the living room in peace.

It's always wise, though, to keep an eye on the enemy....

No pictures, only aromas...

Just a short post, but one that is infused with aromas from our kitchen. I arrived home from work today to find the hub preparing =calimari= yes, you heard me right! I put together a quick salad of arugala, radishes, and onion with some of the most heavenly dressing, a white balsamic vinaigrette that I sometimes splurge on. It was the perfect meal, and now I am perfectly content....

We had a delightful day at the shop, with Robin at the helm for the class, which we held outside under the breezeway by the back door. It was wonderful, and we will continue to hold classes outside while our wonderful weather is fine and fair. Robin dropped off a tiara with a sea theme for an upcoming class....stay tuned!

Another update: the tea lounge across the street from us is now open, and it is hot, hot hot! A very cool and zen atmosphere, great menu and lovely teas. Theresa has already taken it for a test run, as did Dede and I yesterday...seal of approval here with applied!

Have a wonderful weekend, I am planning on it myself! N

Catching up...

I am finally seeming to catch my breath after all the hubbub at the store and things are settling down again. I spent a couple of days working on other things such as catching up to my laundry, which as Deb and I were discussing yesterday, seems to to elude me like someone you're chasing that keeps disappearing around a corner just as you catch sight of them...another day, another load.

As you can see from the picture above, the jacarandas are in bloom and showering us with their beautiful lavender blooms, which at the peak of their bloom can be heard falling at night, and hit the pavement with a soft plop. In the morning, the sound you hear in the quiet is the soft buzz of bees hovering above the drifts of blossoms for their nectar...

And look at these lovely things! We so seldom get to see peonies down here is the south, but Theresa showed up one Thursday for open studio with these in hand. They were completely closed when she brought them, and it was something to see them unfurl a little each day, culminating in this display of the most heavenly pink...

There are, of course, other pinks that I adore as well, like these little antique millinery flowers from an estate, flanked by some equally delicious ostrich plumes. Is there ever enough pink?

These are a few pics I snapped of Dede's last Marie Journal class, where fun was had by all. We sipped on mimosas, and nibbled the fabulous tuxedo cake and homemade muffins brought by Erin, along with fresh strawberries. Here Dede demos some paper stitching while Diane McKillip and Joan Whitmore look on....

I love to take a good 'mess' photo, and you can see there was a table full of creative crazy going on here. Tina Capriotti is tucked back there in a corner, and Jackie McTeer is working away at right... Here are some of the results...

C'est tres jolie, non?

Here's our 'class photo', which Dede wanted to take on the steps, just like we did for her first class at Lily. From left are Tina, Dede, Joan, Diane, Jackie, Erin and Margie with their beautiful creations.
