Since you asked:

"Therefore, to be possess'd with double pomp, to guard a title that was rich before, to gild refined gold, to paint the lily,
to throw a perfume on the violet, to smooth the ice, or add another hue unto the rainbow, or with taper-light
to seek the beauteous eye of heaven to garnish, is wasteful and ridiculous excess."

~William Shakespeare,
ca. 1595

Yup, that's us.

Your help is needed...

Dear readers:

I am usually posting something a bit more entertaining, but I hope you will not mind me putting out a very special request. I have a friend, another woman, who is experiencing great difficulty in her life right now, and could dearly use our help. She desperately needs an expensive repair to her car, or another automobile so she can continue to work and support herself.

Our list is nearly 500 women strong, and I am asking any who can afford to help to do so. I think this is an opportunity for us to make a difference in one woman's life, and it is something I know she would never ask for herself. As well, it is not something that I alone can do for her.

If you would like to help, I have a separate paypal account in which we can gather funds, and donations can be sent to me using the email address njamar@alainjamar.com. Please put the words "auto fund" in the message line. If you would like to send a check to help, you may drop it by the store or mail it to the address shown below. If you send a check, please make it payable to me, Nancy Jamar, and I will see that it goes to the fund. Do not make checks out to Gilding the Lily, as this is not related to my business. This is a personal plea for help for a dear friend. If anyone has a car they would like to donate, please contact me directly at (714) 349-2069 on my cel phone.

Our hearts are so often torn by the plight of people who are far away from us, the victims of natural disasters and so on. We have the opportunity here to help someone close by who has no where else to turn. She will probably be mad as a hornet that I am doing this, but we are all she has right now. Please help if you are able.

How fun is this...?

I found these vintage brass bangles a week ago and had time to play around with them day before yesterday. They have a channel down the middle and a raised edge that is perfect for collaging just about anything. I landed on some inky black rayon velvet ribbon and started fishing through the drawers for findings...

I came up with one of my favorites, a little vintage brass pronged filigree that sets off the ribbon perfectly. They were spaced along the ribbon in no time, punched through and hammered on, and then the whole kit and kaboodle was slathered with E6000 and clamped within an inch of its life. I'm going to drill one edge and put a sassy chain tassel on it with a filigree bead cap next to up the ante a little.

Whaddya think?

Al fresco...

This is one of the latest additions to the Jamar household...

It's our new dining table for the deck, which Alain repurposed from an old drafting table we had tucked in the rafters of the garage. He's been wanting to do something with it for years, but it's just too darn big for any of our small rooms in this old house, so...

He cut it down in width, height and sanded the bejayzus out of it. You can still see the pin holes on the top where artwork and boards were pinned in place, pre-dating the use of tape. There were some great coffee rings all along one edge, but those were removed with the sanding. Wonder who sat at this old table and designed...?

We kept the old metal tag from the bottom rung of the table and put it smack dab in the center so we can also remember its humble origins. Now it sports a spar varnish finish that will protect it from the elements out on the deck, and we have a spot for our summer dining adventures...

This was the inaugural meal at our table. A salad made with great white northern beads, celery, onion, sun dried tomatoes, peppers and shrimp, served with some fresh bread, goat cheese and sund dried tomato pesto. I could live on this!

Hippity Hoppity...

We'll be staging our first Easter egg hunt at Lily on Saturday, and all visitors to the store can find and keep three eggs each until they are gone! Some of the eggs will be filled with just plain old goodies (C-A-N-D-Y), but most will be filled with goodies from the store, all hand-picked by me.

They'll include vintage rhinestone findings, gemstones, ribbons, buttons, lace, findings, filigrees and more! And some of the eggs will have gift certificates for the store as well. I will be stashing the eggs all over the store this evening after closing, and all Easter egg hunters are encouraged to join us!
We hope to see you there!
